MAKING MUSIC FOR GAMES
We’ve invited composer and former music designer for PlayStation, Lucy Hayes, to host our first digital workshop of 2026. In this in-depth, interactive session, Lucy will break down her creative process and career pathway, helping to open up this corner of the industry for complete beginners. Across the course of two hours, Lucy will explore the following areas:
- Dissecting a game score: creating music for interactive media
- Breaking down a brief: mini exercise and group sharing
- From music creator to composer: getting your foot in the door
- Different roles in game audio: composer vs sound designer
- A sonic map of the industry: different studio aesthetics
The teaching in this session will be based around Spitfire Audio’s Orchestral Library, and will offer participants the chance to build their own sessions alongside Lucy in real-time. Please download the library for free in advance of the session to get the most out of this workshop.
Think you would benefit from this session, but can’t afford to contribute? We have a few bursary spaces reserved for those in positions of financial hardship. We trust these will be taken by those who need them – no questions asked. Feel free to email us at members@saffronmusic.uk to request one.
ABOUT LUCY HAYES
Lucy Hayes is a composer and vocalist. Her characterful scores for games, film, and television are driven by a love of storytelling and worldbuilding.
She started out as an in-house music designer at Sony PlayStation (Lego: Horizon Adventures, Until Dawn) before moving into composition independently, and has worked on critically-acclaimed titles in games, film and TV (Dune: Prophecy, MobLand, The Amateur). She is currently composing Hazelight‘s next video game title. As a resident composer for Spitfire Audio, she has created educational videos and content for their large online community.
Trained in Jazz vocals and composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, her music education began with her great-grandmother, who was a classical pianist and taught her to play. She occasionally releases as an artist – most recently, a wild DnB collaboration called ‘Baby‘ she wrote with Imogen Heap and her experimental AI.mogen vocal model. When not composing, she likes to lift weights, climb, draw, play games and hunt for fossils (not at the same time).

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
