AN INTRO TO MODULAR SYNTHESIS
Are you a music producer or sound designer who’s curious about modular synthesis but don’t know where to begin?
Modular synthesisers are electronic musical instruments made up of individual modules, connected together through patch cables. Different arrangements of cables result in different sounds, presenting endless possibilities for sonic experimentation.
Getting started with these instruments can seem complicated and cost-prohibitive, but modular synthesis doesn’t have to be intimidating. In our October Tech Dissect, composer and sound artist Loula Yorke will walk you through the basics of this approach to audio creation using the free version of the tool VCV Rack 2.0, which you can download ahead of the session here.
We’ll get VCV Rack up and running, get comfortable with the user interface, and build some basic modular patches together from scratch.
ABOUT LOULA YORKE
Loula Yorke is a composer, sound artist and improviser with a specialism in modular synthesis. Loula’s practice incorporates socially engaged live sonic art pieces, such as 2021’s Atari Punk Girls, through to critically acclaimed recorded works, such as 2022’s Florescence, and live modular synthesis performances that incorporate a kaleidoscope of melodic sequences, noise, and snatches of processed voice. She is a past beneficiary of the Oram Award and the Sound Generator artist development program. In late 2023, she will be releasing her fifth album, Volta, recorded entirely live using her modular synth.
